Radford Evaluated by Insurance Services Office:
Radford, Va. - The City of Radford was recently evaluated by the Insurance Services Office (ISO) for building codes, code application, and comprehensive effectiveness. After Radford’s application and building regulations were benchmarked against data collected throughout the country, Radford received a “Class 3” rating.
Local building codes have a profound effect on structural integrity, a community’s hardiness to the effects natural disasters, as well as the economic and safety well-being of a locality. About every five years, 14,000 communities are evaluated and ranked by the ISO on three elements; administration of code, plan review and field inspection.
The ISO is a national independent statistical, rating and advisory organization that serves the property and casualty insurance industry. They collect information associated with a community’s building code adoption and enforcement services. The information is analyzed and scored based on effectiveness from 1 to 10, with Class 1 being the highest rating. Municipalities with well enforced, up-to-date codes, experience better overall loss, which can be reflected in a citizen’s insurance rates.
This is an extensive, ongoing process and reflects Radford’s overall commitment to structural integrity, public safety, and code administration. The “Class 3” rating is a tremendous accomplishment for the City of Radford, specifically the Building Department and will benefit the Radford community, as a whole.
