I think it would be GREAT to have a community garage sale, maybe at Bisset Park. At the end of every semester, hundreds of RU students throw good furniture, tools, books, etc. into the dumpsters because they can't sell or get rid of them properly before having to move off campus, out of town, or into a different apartment where those items are not needed. Having a community garage sale would give everyone in the community a much higher change of selling their gently used items to students in need and on a budget. If necessary, maybe a low registration or entrance fee could be collected from sellers to cover setup and cleanup costs. As an RU student myself, I can tell you that an event like this would have a great turnout from students, especially if held in late April or early May, and I bet the larger community would participate as well. It would be a great networking opportunity for many of us and a chance to keep much-needed household items out of the landfill!
